On October 17, 2012, the Department of Health, Kaohsiung City Government, decided to grant most of the archives and medical instruments of Taiwan Medical Museum to Kaohsiung Medical University to establish a new exhibition place. The president of the university, Professor Ching-Kuan Liu, accepted the decision and promised to establish a place on campus which is open to all faculty, students and the citizens to advocate medical humanity.
In the second half of the 19th century, foreign medical missionaries and medical personnel of Customs, who entered Taiwan from Ta-Kao (Kaohsiung), built the first western-style hospital on the island, which began the history of modern medical services in Taiwan. The establishment of the development of Kaohsiung Medical University could be regarded to inherit the historical mission on Taiwan medical education and dedication. The Museum of Kaohsiung Medical University Historical Archives and Southern Taiwan Medical History consists of the existing Museum of Kaohsiung Medical University and newly established Museum of Southern Taiwan Medical History. The museum aims to collect and exhibit the related archives and medical instruments, and provide the faculty and students of the university and the citizens an educational venue. Visitors of the museum would realize the growth of the university and the medical development of southern Taiwan.
